90年代时候，我们大部分人使用的移动存储设备都还是1.44M软盘，但那时候我们玩一个DOS的软件也就几十K，大的几百K，那时候主流的硬盘也就是几百M。
到了97年后，WIN95、WIN97开始进入人们的视野，软件也开始逐渐大起来，几十M以上的软件开始出现，很多软件用一个软盘都无法拷贝完整，需要用几个软盘来分拆拷贝，而当时5.1G的昆腾硬盘就是属于相当大的了。这个时候多媒体电脑的概念已经流行，大家买电脑除了工作以外，还有加入了更多的娱乐概念，REAL格式的压缩电影，一部几十M。
2000年以后，XP系统普及，上百M的软件比比皆是，1.44M软盘彻底被淘汰，人们开始使用U盘和可擦写光盘来作为移动存储设备，那时的U盘是128M，而光盘一般是650M左右，那时市面上最大的硬盘是IBM的，10G以上。这时候我们配移动硬盘都是2G-4G。
现在，再看看我们现在的电脑，硬盘主流都是500G以上，甚至TB级，很多游戏软件动辄几个G，一部高清电影30多个G，根据国内著名安全存储厂家力杰的调查报告显示，2011年U盘主流是4G、8G、16G，而移动硬盘主流则是500G一统天下。
我们可以发现，不论时代如何发展，U盘和移动硬盘在容量上的差距始终无法缩短。21世纪以来，U盘从128M上升到8G，涨了60倍左右，而移动硬盘从4G到现在的500G，涨了120倍左右，涨幅是U盘的2倍。随着各类软件和高清电影文件越来越臃肿，移动硬盘还是作为大容量移动存储的首选，U盘只能作为小文件存储设备。U盘的特点是更便携，但U盘目前还无法作为大容量存储设备来使用，因为U盘容量的扩展远不及软件容量的扩展，只有移动硬盘才可以跟的上大容量软件程序的发展。
U盘要取代移动硬盘，最大的问题在于成本。U盘是由FLASH芯片来完成存储工作（U盘组成结构：http://www.kkzj.com/），而移动硬盘是通过磁盘来存储文件。FLASH的价格一直居高不下，4G就需要40多元，1G接近10元的价格和移动硬盘1G不到1元的价格相比，性价比实在太低。
或许在未来，解决了U盘FLASH成本的问题，U盘有可能和移动硬盘合并为一个产品，我们拭目以待。
