DOS是磁盘操作系统(英文：Disk Operating System)的缩写，是个人计算机上的一类操作系统，基本功能有执行命令和程序功能、I/O管理功能、磁盘与文件管理。
它也是单一用户、单工的操作系统，拥有不可重入的基本核心函数(意即同时间只能有一个程序调用这些函数)。由于DOS的实用性，它深深受到国内外人们的普遍喜爱，一直拥有数以亿计的用户。与我们现在使用的操作系统最大的区别在于，它是命令行形式的，靠输入命令来进行人机对话。并通过命令的形式把指令传给计算机，让计算机实现操作的。
