1、现代操作系统的两个基本特征是资源共享和程序的并发执行。操作系统是管理计算机硬件资源，控制其他程序运行并为用户提供交互操作界面的系统软件的集合。操作系统是计算机系统的关键组成部分，负责管理与配置内存、决定系统资源供需的优先次序、控制输入与输出设备、操作网络与管理文件系统等基本任务。操作系统的种类很多，各种设备安装的操作系统可从简单到复杂，可从手机的嵌入式操作系统到超级计算机的大型操作系统。目前流行的现代操作系统主要有Android、BSD、iOS、Linux、Mac OS X、Windows、Windows Phone和z/OS等，除了Windows和z/OS等少数操作系统，大部分操作系统都为类Unix操作系统。
2、所谓资源共享是指，系统中的资源可供内存中多个并发执行的进程共同使用。由于资源的属性不同，故多个进程对资源的共享方式也不同，可以分为：互斥共享方式 和 同时访问方式。
3、并发执行是指两个或者多个事件在同一时间的间隔内发生，它是一个较为宏观的概念。在多道程序环境下，并发性是指在一段时间内有多道程序在同时运行，但在单处理机的系统中，每一时刻仅能执行一道程序，故微观上这些程序是在交替执行的。
