GPU英文全称Graphic Processing Unit，中文翻译为“图形处理器”;GPU是显示卡的“大脑”，它决定了该显卡的档次和大部分性能，在手机主板上，GPU芯片一般都是紧挨着CPU芯片的。
GPU是图形处理器，又称显示核心、视觉处理器、显示芯片，是一种专门在个人电脑、工作站、游戏机和一些移动设备(如平板电脑、智能手机等)上做图像和图形相关运算工作的微处理器。
GPU使显卡减少了对CPU的依赖，并进行部分原本CPU的工作，尤其是在3D图形处理时GPU所采用的核心技术有硬件T&L(几何转换和光照处理)、立方环境材质贴图和顶点混合、纹理压缩和凹凸映射贴图、双重纹理四像素256位渲染引擎等，而硬件T&L技术可以说是GPU的标志。
GPU安装在称为图形板的部件上，图形板是计算机中的监视器上显示的组件，将它连接到个人电脑上，安装在图形板上的CPU和内存等组件称为主板，响应来自主板上CPU的命令，从而GPU渲染图像。还有一个所谓的“内置GPU”，在主板上安装的芯片组中内置GPU，作为使用板载图形的优势，实现了省电和节省空间，另一方面，图形板的图像处理性能要高得多，使用3D图形时，建议安装图形板。
